Pallay Puncho Rainbow Mountain

FULL DAY

An Exclusive Adventure with Machupicchu Global

Beyond the crowded routes, there is a corner of the Andes where the colors of the earth tell ancient stories. We invite you to discover Pallay Punchu Rainbow Mountain of Apu Tacllo, a unique and surprisingly little-known destination in Cusco, ideal for those seeking an authentic experience, far from the crowds, and in pure connection with the majesty of nature.

Located at 4,791 meters above sea level and over 190 kilometers from the city of Cusco, Pallay Punchu emerges as a natural canvas sculpted over millions of years. The mineral composition of its soils has given rise to a palette of intense tones: reds, greens, purples, pinks, and ochres that intertwine in dreamlike mountain formations.

Unlike the crowded Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) or the Palccoyo Mountain Range, Pallay Punchu offers an atmosphere of tranquility and exclusivity. It is the perfect setting for the traveler who wishes to contemplate Andean grandeur in a pristine, less-explored environment, with the reward of a visual spectacle that will be etched in their memory forever.

With Machupicchu Global, this adventure combines the moderate challenge of a high-altitude hike with the warmth of high Andean communities and the magic of Cusco’s most remote landscapes.

Program

04:00 am | Pick-up from your hotel in Cusco
The adventure begins before dawn. Our Machupicchu Global team will pick you up from your accommodation to begin a journey south of the Sacred Valley. We will board our comfortable tourist transport, equipped with portable oxygen and a first aid kit, and venture onto the road that winds through picturesque Andean villages and high mountain landscapes.

07:00 am | Revitalizing Breakfast in Cusipata
After approximately 2 and a half hours of travel, we will make a stop in the welcoming town of Cusipata. Here we will enjoy a typical Andean breakfast, prepared with local products to recharge our energy and prepare the body for the hike.

08:30 am | Panoramic Views of Langui Lagoon
We will continue our journey towards the district of Layo. During the journey, we will witness one of the most beautiful postcards of the Cusco highlands: the imposing Langui Lagoon, a deep blue mirror of water surrounded by vast plains and the imposing mountain range of the Andes. This will be a mandatory stop to capture photographs and breathe in the peace of the place.

10:00 am | Start of the Hike to Pallay Punchu
We will arrive at the starting point of the hike. Our professional Machupicchu Global guide will give you an informative talk and provide trekking poles for greater safety. We will begin an ascending hike, surrounded by pure air, high-altitude vegetation, and the immensity of the Andean landscape. The effort is rewarded with each step with views that emerge among the mountains.

12:00 pm | Arrival at the Summit: The Canvas of the Earth
We will reach the summit of Pallay Punchu Mountain (4,791 m a.s.l.). The spectacle is simply breathtaking: before our eyes unfolds a multicolored landscape of vibrant tones that seem hand-painted. The geological layers of red, green, purple, and pink create undulating formations that extend as far as the eye can see. We will have ample free time to rest, take the best photographs, and listen to the guide’s fascinating explanations about the geological formation of this phenomenon and its profound meaning for local communities.

01:30 pm | Descent and Box Lunch
We will begin the descent back to the starting point, a path that will allow us to say goodbye to the landscape from different perspectives. Upon arrival, a light and nutritious box lunch awaits you, perfect for regaining strength after the hike.

02:30 pm | Return to Cusco
We will board our vehicle to begin the return journey to the city. During the trip, you can relax and once again enjoy the imposing Andean landscapes as dusk falls over the valley.

07:00 pm (approx.) | Arrival in Cusco
We will arrive in the city of Cusco, dropping you off at the Plaza de Armas or a central point near your accommodation. Thus concludes an unforgettable day at one of the most surprising and authentic destinations in the Peruvian Andes.

Recommendations

Recommendations for your trip:

To ensure your experience with Machupicchu Global is a complete success, we share these key recommendations:

Preparation and Health:

  • Acclimatization: We recommend arriving in Cusco at least 2 days before the tour to properly acclimate to the altitude (3,400 m a.s.l.).
  • Physical condition: The hike is of moderate difficulty and is done at altitude. A good basic physical condition will make the experience much more enjoyable.

Clothing and Footwear:

  • Layering system: Wear light, breathable clothing as a base, a middle insulating layer (fleece), and a windbreaker or waterproof jacket as the outer layer.
  • Trekking footwear: Use trekking shoes with deep-traction soles (gore-tex or similar). The trail may have loose or slippery sections.
  • Protection: Do not forget a hat or wide-brimmed hat, gloves, scarf or fleece neck gaiter, and UV-protection sunglasses.

Hydration and Nutrition:

  • Water: Bring your own reusable water bottle (minimum 1.5 liters). Staying hydrated is vital at altitude.
  • Energy snacks: Nuts, chocolate, energy bars, or coca candies will help you maintain energy during the hike.

Sun Protection (Mandatory):

Solar radiation at altitude is extremely intense. Apply high-resistance sunscreen (50+ SPF) to your face, ears, and neck before starting the hike and bring a protective lip balm.

Documentation and Money:

  • Identification document: Bring your original passport or valid national ID.
  • Cash: Bring Peruvian soles in small denominations for possible personal expenses, handicraft purchases, or tips.

Other Useful Tips:

  • Small backpack: Bring a lightweight, comfortable backpack to carry your belongings during the hike.
  • Camera: Make sure to bring fully charged batteries and enough storage space. The landscapes are worth it!
  • Personal medication: If you are prone to altitude sickness, you can purchase “Soroche Pills” (Acetazolamide) in Cusco pharmacies, always under medical recommendation.
  • Respect for the environment: Help us preserve the beauty of Pallay Punchu. Do not leave waste on the trail and always follow your guide’s instructions.
  • Punctuality: Respect the pick-up times. Punctuality is essential for the success and safety of the excursion.
